hberg hall\n\n\n\n\n\n Let X be a variety over F_p . Fix a prime l differen
t from p\, an algebraic closure \overline{Q_l} of Q_l\, and a p-adic valua
tion v of the subfield of algebraic numbers in \oversline{Q_l} normalized
so that v(p)=1. Let M be a \overline{Q_l}-sheaf on X such that for every c
losed point x in X the eigenvalues of the geometric Frobenius acting on M_
x are algebraic numbers. Applying the valuation v to these numbers and div
idingby the degree of x over F_p\, we get a collection of rational numbers
\, which are called slopes of M at x.In a joint work with K.Kedlaya we pro
ved that if X is a smooth curve and M is an irreducible local system then
for almost all x the gaps between two consecutive slopes of M at x are not
greater than 1. (If M has rank 2 then one can even replace “almost all” b
y “all”\, but in the rank 3 case this is false.) This result is equivalent
to certain estimates for the p-adic valuations of almost all Hecke eigenv
alues of cuspidal automorphic representations (in the case of function fie
lds).I will say only a few words about the proof (which is based on the th
eory of F-isocrystals).\n\nLecturer: \n\nVladimir Drinfeld (Chicago)\n\n

Jerusalem\n\n\n\n (with support from École Polytechnique and Freie Universi
tät Berlin)\n\n\n\n October 2nd - 11th 2018\n\n\n\n\n Description\n\n\n\n The
Einstein Institute of Mathematics will host a 10 day undergraduate worksh
op\, bringing together outstanding (2nd and 3rd year) undergraduate studen
ts from Israel and abroad. The workshop will be centered around two seminar
-style courses\, each one consisting of talks given by the students themse
lves and moderated by a faculty member from the institute. This year the to
pics are: \n\n \n Topics in the Theory of Zeta and L-Functions (moderated b
y Jasmin Matz). \n \n \n Description: The Riemann zeta function is the protot
ypical example of a large zoo of ζ- and L-function. Such functions are of
central interests in modern number theory. In this seminar we are going to
study several examples with an emphasis on analytical and spectral aspect
s. \n \n Polytopes (moderated by Eran Nevo). \n \n \n Description: Polytopes h
ave fascinated humans since antiquity and are related to many areas of mod
ern mathematics. We will study polytopes\, focusing on connections between
their geometric and combinatorial properties. \n \n In addition\, there wil
l be minicourses by Klaus Altmann (FU Berlin) and Jake Solomon (HUJI)\, gu
est lectures\, and a social program.More information regarding the program
will be posted here\, as it becomes available.Check out the workshop's po
sters in English and Hebrew!\n \n \n\n Location and Dates\n\n\n\n The workshop
will take place at the Einstein Institute of Mathematics \, the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem \, Jerusalem\, Israel.Participants are expected to
arrive the day before\, on Sunday\, October 1st\, and the workshop will e
nd on Thursday\, October 11th in the afternoon. \n \n\n Applications \n\n\n
\n To apply please send an email to huji.math.undergrad.workshop@gmail.com
with the following information: \n\n \n Your name\, gender\, address\, and
institution. \n \n \n A grade transcript with a clear listing of the courses
you've taken so far in your mathematical studies (an informal transcript i
s OK). \n \n \n The name of a contact person from whom we may request a recom
mendation letter if needed. \n \n An application with only partial informati
on (for example\, if you don't have a contact person who'll write you a le
tter)\, is better than no application at all!Applications received by Frid
ay\, June 15th\, 2018\, will receive full consideration. \n \n\n Financial S
upport\, Lodging\, Etc. \n\n\n\n Partial support towards travel is availabl
e.Shared lodging (two in a room) at the Bretter House\, as well as breakf
ast and lunch will be provided for accepted participants. For inquiries ple
