Title: Mean curvature encoding physical concepts in general relativity
Abstract: Just as the Laplace operator is central for many linear models describing physical phenomena the mean curvature of submanifolds is used in General Relativity to identify natural geometric coordinate systems and to encode physical concepts such as mass, center of mass and momentum in the geometric structure of Lorentzian manifolds satisfying Einstein’s equations. Advances in quasilinear elliptic and parabolic PDEs during the last decades have led to some beautiful results linking geometry, analysis and physics. The lecture describes recent progress and open challenges.
