Third Gordon lecture

Speaker: Gerhard Huisken (MFO and Tubingen)

Title: "Concepts of quasi-local mass in General Relativity"

Abstract:
In view of the geometric nature of General Relativity the mass and energy content of a bounded spatial region will not depend on the geometry of the region alone but should be defined with respect to an observer, i.e. with respect to a certain background geometry. The lecture concentrates on concepts developed by Hawking and Bartnik and discusses the relation to the isoperimetric problem with the help of geometric flows such as the inverse mean curvature flow. This lecture will be self contained and can be followed without having attended the previous two Gordon lectures.
