Title: Ribbono shel olam: Gauss, Codazzi and shapes of elastic ribbons
Abstract: Ribbons are elastic bodies that are thin and narrow. Many ribbons in nature, like leaves and supramolecular assemblies, have non-trivial internal geometries, due to which they obtain various shapes, and exhibit interesting shape transitions as they grow.
In this talk I will present how to model these bodies mathematically, the various phenomena that ribbons exhibit, and the first rigorous explanations we have for these shape transitions (+ open questions).
I will not assume any prior knowledge in differential geometry or elasticity theory.
Based on joint works with Sharon, Siéfert and Levin (physics) and Mora (mathematics).
