Abstract:
Margulis' Normal Subgroup Theorem says that a conjugacy class C in a higher rank lattice generates a finite-index subgroup. I'll talk about a quantitative version of this theorem: for many such lattices (and conjecturally, for all of them) there is a constant N such that the set theoretic product (C \cup C^{-1})^N contains a finite-index subgroup. I'll then talk about applications of this result to the model theory of higher rank lattices and classification of norms on them.
Based on a joint work with Chen Meiri.
