Title: Buildings in the context of symmetric spaces.
Abstract: Buildings are combinatorial objects introduced by Tits to serve as 'symmetric spaces' for p-adic Lie groups. The goal of this talk is to present these objects and give some meaning to this slogan. I will give a combinatorial / geometric definition of buildings, and explain how these objects are analogues of, and appear naturally in, symmetric spaces. Time permits (time being the time between now and Sunday) I will briefly sketch a construction of the building associated to SL_n(Q_p) via the space of norms on a p-adic vector field.
