Abstract: Suppose f is surface diffeomorphism with positive topological entropy, and a measure of maximal entropy m. In this case m can be coded as a countable state Markov chain. We show that if f is topologically mixing and if f is differentiable infinitely many times, then there is a coding such that the  transition matrix of this Markov chain acts with spectral gap on some Banach space. This has many consequences.
