Title: The direct summand theorem, Cohen-Macaulay algebras, and their geometric significance

Abstract: 
The third lecture will reinterpret and reconsider these results from the viewpoint of the canonical topology and the fpqc topology on schemes, especially how finite coverings distinguish them - a geometric viewpoint on the theory of splinters (joint work with L. Fiorot).
