 Aryeh Dvoretzky, who was a member of the editorial board, and later of the general editorial board of the Israel Journal of
Mathematics since its foundation in 1963, and of its predecessor, the Bulletin of the Research Council of Israel (Section F),
passed away on May 8th, 2008. He is survived by his daughter Gina. His wife, Sarah, a well-known classic scholar, passed away
in 1972, and his son Gideon was killed in the 1973 Day of Atonement war.
Dvoretzky received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the Hebrew University in 1941, under the supervision of Michael Fekete. He
was the first alumnus of the Hebrew University to become a full professor in it. He received the Israel Prize for Exact Sciences in
1973. At the Hebrew University Devoretzky was dean of the faculty of science and a vice-president.
Later he was elected President of the Weizmann Institute of Science, and president of the Israel Academy of Sciences, of which
he was one of the founding members. He was the founder and first director of the Institute for Advanced Studies of the Hebrew
University.
Dvoretzky was very active and influential in public life, serving as chief scientist for the Ministry of Defense, chairing and
participating in many committees, and rendering official and unofficial advice.
