M.Sc. Program
About the program
The objective of the MSc study program at the Einstein Institute of Mathematics is to broaden and deepen students’ mathematical understanding and knowledge, as well as to expose them to current mathematical research.
We welcome applications by excellent international students. A limited number of extended scholarships are available for the purpose of supporting outstanding foreign students in this unique, two-year program.
Program structure
The program requirements are the same as for Israeli students in the MSc research track.
The number of credit points required to complete the course of study is 30. These should include at least three “Fundamental Concepts” courses, a Seminar, and participation in the Graduate Student Workshop (or, alternatively, an additional “Fundamental Concepts” course). All graduate courses are taught in English (if at least one participant does not speak Hebrew). Note, however, that most undergraduate courses are taught in Hebrew.
The “Fundamental Concepts” courses are six graduate courses presenting a thorough introduction to some central areas in modern mathematics. The courses are:
- Fundamental concepts in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry
- Fundamental concepts in differential geometry
- Fundamental concepts in algebraic topology
- Fundamental concepts in representation theory
- Fundamental concepts in functional analysis
- Fundamental concepts in spectral analysis
In addition to the courses, students are required to complete a research thesis under the guidance of one of the Institute’s faculty members. This thesis is evaluated by the advisor and an additional reader.
At the end of their course of study, students must present a lecture on their thesis and take an oral exam covering topics from math undergraduate studies.
Admissions
The application review will begin on January 20, though applications submitted later will also be considered.
Applications should be sent by email to Math.MSc@mail.huji.ac.il . Please ensure that the subject line has the form "Application letter for Last Name, First Name". The email should include:
- CV.
- Transcripts from your BSc degree.
- Two or more recommendation letters. The writers of the letters should send them directly to the mail above (they should not be sent by the applicant!), with the subject line "Recommendation letter for Last Name, First Name". We encourage you to solicit a letter from someone who has interacted with our department before.
Financial support
Students accepted to the program will receive:
- Scholarship (with a supplement for families).
- Full tuition support.
- Support towards housing expenses.
- Local health insurance.
- Support for travel to/from Israel.
Subject to compliance with the academic requirements, the support will be provided for two years.
