Dr. Shai Evra (who will be joining our faculty in the fall of 2021) received the 2020 SASTRA Ramanujan Prize.
Congratulation to Dr. Shai Evra who will recieve the 2020 Nessyahu Prize of the Israel Mathematical Union. The Haim Nessyahu Prize in Mathematics is awarded annually as part of a national contest of excellent Ph.D. dissertations in sciences.

Congratulations to Prof. David Kazhdan recipient of the 2020 Shaw Prize.
The prize was awarded to Prof. Kazhdan and Prof. Beilinson (Chicago) by the Shaw Prize Foundation
"for their huge influence on and profound contributions to representation theory, as well as many other areas of mathematics."
From our experience many students struggle with their mathematical studies during the first semester. Some struggle because they don’t remember enough of the mathematics they learned in high school and some because the language of mathematics is foreign to them.
In order to resolve these difficulties we offer a “preliminary workshop to mathematical studies“. We highly recommend prospective students to attend this worshop, more details here.
Congratulations to Prof. Karim Adiprasito recipient of the 2020 EMS Prize.
Every four years, the European Mathematical Society awards 10 EMS Prizes. The EMS Prizes are awarded “to young researchers not older than 35 years, of European nationality or working in Europe, in recognition of excellent contributions in mathematics.”
Prof. Alex Lubotzky is one of the reciepients of the 2020 European Research Council’s prestigious Advanced Grant for groundbreaking research "Stability and Testability: Groups and Codes".
Dear Hebrew University Community,
We are thrilled to announce that Professor Hillel Furstenberg of the Einstein Institute has won the 2020 Abel Prize—the Nobel Prize of Mathematics!
This is the first time the award has been awarded to an Israeli researcher since the prize was established in 2003. The Abel Prize is the most prestigious international prize in the world of mathematics and is considered on par with the Nobel Prize, which does not have a mathematics category. Professor Asher Cohen, president of Hebrew University, said “this is a tremendous honor for the Hebrew University. We could not be more proud.”
Professor Hillel Furstenberg, a researcher in the Einstein institute for Mathematics, was awarded the Abel alongside Professor Gregory Margulis of Yale University. The prize is awarded annually by the King of Norway, and the prizewinner is selected by a committee comprised of five internationally renowned mathematicians.

Professors Furstenberg and Margulis invented techniques to use random processes (a method of using random sequencing) to investigate mathematical objects, such as groups and graphs. In doing so, they introduced probability methods for solving open questions in group theory, number theory, combinatorics, computer science and beyond. The study of random processes is a major branch of probability theory.
Abel Committee chairperson Hans Munthe-Kaas said that “Furstenberg and Margulis’ work demonstrates how effective it can be to cross disciplines, and successfully overthrows the traditional boundary between pure and applied mathematics. Furstenberg and Margulis have amazed the mathematics world with their ingenious use of random probability and transmission methods to solve open problems in multiple mathematic disciplines.”
Professor Asher Cohen, president of the Hebrew University, said “Prof. Furstenberg’s Abel prize win is a huge honor for Hebrew University. Hillel is not just a mathematician of international renown; he is also a mentor to generations of students who, today, design and advance the world of mathematics. We could not be prouder of this Nobel-level prize win.”

The Abel in Jerusalem day at Einstein Institute of mathematics took place on January 12, with excellent talks by C. Hacon, F. Labourie, U. Tillmann, C. Voisin.
Congratulations to Yannai Gonczarowski recipient of the 2018 SIGecom Doctoral Dissertation Award, for his PhD thesis written at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem under the supervision of Professor Sergiu Hart and Professor Noam Nisan.
The SIGecom Doctoral Dissertation Award recognizes an outstanding dissertation in the field of economics and computation.

Congratulation to Dr. Yuval Peled who will recieve the 2019 Nessyahu Prize of the Israel Mathematical Union. The Haim Nessyahu Prize in Mathematics is awarded annually as part of a national contest of excellent Ph.D. dissertations in sciences.
Congratulation to Dr. Ori Parzanchevski who will recieve the 2019 Levitzki Prize of the Israel Mathematical Union (with Dr. Doron Puder of the Tel-Aviv University). The prize is awarded every two years to a young Israeli mathematician for research in Algebra or related areas.
